Ammonium (NH₄⁺) is a positively charged ion formed when ammonia (NH₃) gains a proton. When ammonia is dissolved in water, the liquid is called an ammonia solution.
The formula for ammonium hydroxide is NH4OH. Despite the fact that the name ammonium hydroxide implies an alkali with the composition [NH4+][OH-], it is impossible to isolate NH4OH samples.
