Application of Redox Reaction

Last Updated : 12 May, 2026

Redox reactions are chemical reactions in which oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously through the transfer of electrons. These reactions are widely used in various natural and industrial processes. They are essential for energy production, chemical manufacturing, and various phenomena occurring in daily life.

Some important applications of redox reactions are as follows:

1. Biological Processes: Redox reactions are essential for living organisms as they help in energy production. In respiration, glucose is oxidized while oxygen is reduced. This releases energy, which is stored as ATP (energy currency of cells).

Example:
Glucose + O2 โ†’ CO2 + H2O + Energy

2. Electrochemical Cells: Redox reactions are used to convert chemical energy into electrical energy. Oxidation occurs at the anode and reduction occurs at the cathode. The flow of electrons produces an electric current.

Example:
Dry cells, rechargeable batteries used in mobiles, laptops

3. Corrosion: Corrosion is an undesirable redox reaction that damages metals. Metal (like iron) gets oxidized in presence of air and moisture, leads to formation of rust.

Example:
Iron + Oxygen + Water โ†’ Rust (Fe2O3ยทxH2O)

4. Combustion: Combustion involves rapid oxidation of substances producing heat and light. Fuel is oxidized, oxygen acts as oxidizing agent.

Example:
Burning of petrol, LPG, coal

5. Metallurgy: Redox reactions are used to extract metals from their ores. Metal ores are reduced to obtain pure metal. Reducing agents like carbon are used.

Example:
Fe2O3 + 3CO โ†’ 2Fe + 3CO2

6. Bleaching and Disinfection: Redox reactions help in removing color and killing germs. Oxidizing agents break down colored substances, also destroy harmful microorganisms.

Example:

  • Bleaching powder in clothes
  • Chlorine in water purification

7. Photography: Photography involves redox reactions of silver salts. Light causes reduction of silver ions to metallic silver, this forms the image on film.

Example:
Silver bromide (AgBr) โ†’ Silver (Ag)

8. Environmental Processes: Redox reactions help in maintaining environmental balance. It is used in wastewater treatment, help in degradation of pollutants.

Example:
Removal of harmful substances through oxidation
