This belt is part of an early Proterozoic greenstone belt that stretches east-west across northern Wisconsin. The belt is about 144 miles long by 30 to 50 miles wide. It consists of metavolcanic rocks and sediments of a volcanic arc complex caught up in a continent-continent collision, the Penokean Orogeny, about 1.81 billion years ago. The belt hosts many massive sulfide deposits, of which the Crandon deposit is the largest. The only deposit so far worked is the Flambeau deposit, further west in Rusk County. Most of the deposits do not outcrop, due to thick cover of Pleistocene glacial drift. Prospecting of these deposits have been done off and on by a number of companies since the 1960s. They are known primarily through geophysical surveying and coring.
