Rwanda is a landlocked country in the Great Rift Valley of Central Africa, where the African Great Lakes and Southeast Africa regions converge. It is highly elevated, giving it the sobriquet "land of a thousand hills", with its geography dominated by mountains in the west and savanna to the southeast, with numerous lakes throughout the country.

Prior to 1 January 2006, Rwanda was composed of twelve provinces (known as prefectures up to 2001), but these were abolished in full and redrawn as part of a program of decentralization and reorganization. Today Rwanda is composed of 5 provinces (intara), 30 districts (akarere), 416 sectors (imerenge), 2148 cells (utugari) and 14837 villages (imudungu).

Geologically, Rwanda is primarily composed of alternating sandstones and shales of Mesoproterozoic age, sometimes intercalated by granitic intrusions. Older granites and gneisses predominate in the east of the country. Neogene volcanics are found in the northwestern and southwestern parts of Rwanda. Young alluvials and lake sediments occur along the rivers and lakes.
