Back to the Future

Beginning in 1985, Back to the Future is a film trilogy revolving around teenager Marty McFly and eccentric scientist Emmett "Doc" Brown traveling through time using a DeLorean. The original film told the story of Marty accidentally being sent back in time to 1955, where he unwittingly prevented the first meeting of his parents. In the second film, Doc and Marty venthred into the then-future year of 2015, accidentally letting an elderly Biff Tannen return to the past and change history in the process. The series ended with Back to the Future Part III, which saw Doc stranded in 1885.

Following the conclusion of the film trilogy, the franchise's co-creator Bob Gale remained firm on there never being a fourth installment. In response to the series' continued popularity, a simulator ride based off it was released in 1991. This ride continued the story of the films, with Doc having revealed time travel to the world and founded the Institute of Future Technology to continue his research. Although influental on many future installments of the franchise, waning popularity led to the ride's closure, first in 2007 followed by a complete shutdown in 2016.

Based on a novel by American author Michael Crichton, the Jurassic Park franchise revolves around the titular theme park where extinct dinosaurs have been cloned back to life using blood samples found in prehistoric mosquitos trapped in amber. The original Jurassic Park came out in 1993 and received two sequels; the franchise was later revived in 2015 with Jurassic World, which has received three sequels of its own.

Shrek

[edit | edit source]

Loosely based on a children's book written by cartoonist William Steig, Shrek is a series of animated comedy films telling the story of an ogre named Shrek. The series is known for its mature, crass sense of humor, often making pop culture references or deconstructing familiar tropes, the original film being credited to the popularity of the fractured fairy tale genre in the 2000s. Due to the franchise’s popularity, Shrek is often considered to be the mascot of Dreamworks.

Throughout the series, many popular characters have been introduced, typically portrayed by celebrity actors. The title character was a vehicle for comedian Mike Myers, while introduced in the original film were Donkey, a wise cracking talking donkey voiced by Eddie Murphy, and Princess Fiona, a princess cursed to become an ogre who becomes Shrek's love interest, voiced by Cameron Diaz. In the second film, the character Puss in Boots was introduced, voiced by Antonio Banderas, who would go on to become the protagonist of his own film franchise.
