2025: Civil vessel construction begins for the first time in 30 years

At the end of January 2025, it became known that the Krasnaya Kuznitsa shipyard, a branch of the Zvezdochka Shipyard Repair Center of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), resumed construction of civilian ships after a 30-year hiatus.

By the end of January 2025, the construction of passenger ships with ice reinforcement Onega and Solvychegodsk, which will be commissioned in the spring of 2025, will be completed at the shipyards of the plant.

The Governor of the Arkhangelskaya Region, Alexander Tsybulsky, stressed that the ships were designed taking into account the climatic characteristics of the region and adapted to ice drift and freezing. They will be able to walk on the initial ice until ice crossings are established, which will extend the navigation period.

The new vessels meet all safety requirements and are fully adapted to local operating conditions, - said Alexander Tsybulsky.

The Onega passenger ship is designed for 65 seats, and by the end of 2025 it is planned to hand over two more ice-class vessels - Kenozerye and Kargopol, each with a capacity of 100 people. The maximum speed of ships will be 12 knots (22 km/h).

During the implementation of the project, difficulties arose with import substitution, since initially the ships were designed using foreign components that became inaccessible due to sanctions. The redesign delayed the start of construction by almost a year.

For new passenger vessels, the Zvezdochka Center for Propulsion Systems has created original stainless steel propellers with a diameter of 1.5 meters. The geometry of the blades is developed using the dry design method.

All four vessels will be used to transport residents of the island territories of the Arkhangelsk region. The choice of a local shipyard for construction was supported by Deputy Prime Minister Russia Denis Manturov.[1]
