Broken Hill mining district


Mines listed under this district represent those both outside of the city of Broken Hill as well as the line of lode.

The Broken Hill district effectively covers the outcropping area of the middle Proterozoic Willyama Complex rocks. This area surrounds the city of Broken Hill and extends 50 km west to the NSW / South Australian border, 40 km east, 40 km south and 80 km north. The area has been divided into four sections based on the mapping project conducted by the NSW Geological Survey between 1988 and 2003. The four 1:50000 metallogenic maps include an accompanying publication describing all of the mineral deposits and cover the following areas:

Description: Bluish green xls, found in the late 1980s; (Fe+Mg)/Mn = 0.54. All other Broken Hill johannsenites analysed were actually Mn-rich hedenbergites. However, no specimen should be simply regarded as being johannsenite because it comes from the North Mine. All specimens should be tested to confirm they are either Mn-rich hedenbergite or johannsenite. Specimens which have not been confirmed, should be considered suspect until tested.
