Use Apple Intelligence in Messages on iPhone

Apple Intelligence* allows you to get through your messages even faster with summaries that show you the key points of each conversation, and Smart Reply, which helps you quickly craft a response.

You can also use Apple Intelligence to personalize your conversations by doing any of the following:

Note: Apple Intelligence is not available on all iPhone models or in all languages or regions.** To access the most recent available features, make sure you’re using the latest version of iOS and have Apple Intelligence turned on.

View message summaries

  1. Go to the Messages app 👁 Image
    on your iPhone.

  2. Look under a conversation in the Messages list to see a summary of unread messages in that conversation.

Use Smart Reply in Messages

  1. Go to the Messages app 👁 Image
    on your iPhone.

  2. Tap a conversation, tap the text field, then tap a suggested reply in the keyboard.

    Apple Intelligence drafts a reply in the text field. To refine your reply, see Use Writing Tools with Apple Intelligence on iPhone.

  3. When you’re ready to send your reply, tap 👁 the Send button

Turn message summaries on or off

When you turn on Apple Intelligence, summaries automatically appear under your message conversations. You can turn off summaries if you want to see the most recent message in each conversation instead.

  1. Go to the Settings app 👁 Image
     on your iPhone.

  2. Tap Apps, then tap Messages.

  3. Turn Summarize Messages on or off.

Get suggested polls

You can start a poll in any iMessage conversation—for example, to decide what a group wants to eat, which movie to see, or where to travel. Apple Intelligence can suggest a poll when it detects different options in a conversation.

  1. Go to the Messages app 👁 Image
    on your iPhone.

  2. Start a new group message or open a group conversation to discuss different options.

  3. Tap Create a Poll when it appears.

Create and edit original backgrounds with Image Playground

You can use Image Playground to create backgrounds for your Messages conversations.

  1. Go to the Messages app 👁 Image
    on your iPhone.

  2. Go to the conversation where you want to add a photo to the background.

  3. Tap the name of the person or group at the top of the conversation, then tap Backgrounds.

  4. Tap Playground, then do any of the following:

    • Add a concept: Swipe left to browse concepts—themes, expressions, costumes, accessories, or places—then tap an option.

    • Add a description: Tap “Describe an image,” enter a description, then tap 👁 the Send button
      .

    • Remove a concept: Tap 👁 the Delete button
      .

  5. When you’re happy with your image, tap 👁 the Done button
    .

    Tip: Customize your background even more by choosing a filter for your image—just swipe left to Black & White, Duotone, or Color Wash. You can also pinch the image in and out to crop it.

  6. Tap 👁 the Done button
    to add the background to your conversation.
