The Accessibility tab, the first tab shown when opening the settings

Minecraft's user environment can be configured through the settings menus. A few additional options can be changed only by editing the options.txt file manually.

The settings can be accessed from both the main menu and the game menu. The "Storage" and "Language" settings tabs are not available from the game menu, and some options are only changeable in the main menu or the game menu. World settings are stored per world instead of client-side, and can only be accessed by the host of the world while in the game menu.

The Subscriptions, Storage,[not in future version] and all pack settings tabs still use their old UI and are shown in separate screens. The settings in the game menu on Realms and in the Editor use the old UI for all tabs.

Fancy[note 5]

Select the quality of your game visuals

Changes the graphics mode. Not available in-game when "Allow In-Game Graphics Mode Switching" is disabled. There are four available options, and a subset of options is shown below depending on the selected mode.
Simple

Best for low-end or older devices

Classic graphics, clouds become opaque and do not fade with fog, leaves do not become snowy, round shadows below entities are not visible, and entity lighting is simplified.
Fancy

Classic fancy, great for most devices

Classic Minecraft graphics, equivalent to Fabulous! in Java Edition. This uses the same set of settings as Simple.

Vibrant Visuals[note 6]

Vibrant visuals for a richer, more immersive look. Requires a supported device and compatible Marketplace content

Enables Vibrant Visuals, a deferred rendering mode with PBR textures, biome-configured graphical effects, and dynamic lighting.

Ray Traced[note 7]

Advanced real-time lighting and reflections

Enables ray tracing, a graphics mode with dynamic lighting and physically based rendering configured in certain Marketplace resource packs and for creators.

Simple/Fancy

Brightness
50%

If your screen is still too dark, change the settings on your device, TV, or monitor

Adjusts the brightness of the game. Dims down or lights up the game's surfaces, even if fully dark. It has no effect on gameplay, it is a visual effect. Works in any dimension and affects the Night Vision status effect.

Framerate Limit
Unlimited

Set a limit for maximum frames per second to keep a steady frame rate or prevent overheating your device

Limits how many frames the game can render per second. Slider can be set between 30 and 60 FPS with steps of 5, or Unlimited.

Anti-Aliasing

Not a trick question. How smooth do you like your blocks?

Adjusts the amount of multisample anti aliasing, which smooths the image and removes jagged edges. Available options are powers of 2 between 1 and 16. Not available on mobile devices.[verify]

Smooth Lighting
👁 Image

Better transitions for natural looking shadows and brightness

Toggles smooth lighting. Lighting is smoothed across the blocks with ambient occlusion. This setting does not change the gameplay in any way, but it has a slight effect on performance.

Beautiful Skies
👁 Image

Show sun, moon, stars, and atmospheric effects

Toggles the sun, moon, clouds, stars, sky, End sky, and End flash.

Render Distance
27 chunks (recommended)[note 8]

Adjust the distance at which detail is rendered. A high render distance could impact performance
This high render distance could cause a low frame rate, crashes, or other unexpected behavior[note 9]

The render distance controls how many chunks of the world are visible at once. The fewer chunks that are included, the faster each frame can be rendered, resulting in higher frames per second (FPS). This also affects the render distance of foliage such as transparent leaves, crops and animated textures. Available in 2-10 sections on the slider, ranging from 5-96 chunks maximum (depending on the device). The most distant terrain is faded by fog, to avoid a sharp edge to the visible world. This slider is only available when the graphics mode is set to "Simple" or "Fancy".
The maximum render distance available on the slider depends on the device.

Vibrant Visuals

Preferences
Performance

Choose between optimized performance or enhanced visuals

Sets all Vibrant Visuals options to a predefined setting for better performance or visuals. The default settings depend on the device specifications.
Performance
Favor frame rate and responsiveness
Most Vibrant Visuals settings are set to "Low" or "Off" for a better experience on lower-end devices.
Visuals
Favor visual quality and immersion
Most Vibrant Visuals settings are set to "Medium" for a higher quality of Vibrant Visuals on higher-end devices.
Custom
Your preferences, as you wish
Vibrant Visuals settings are individually set to custom values in the menu below.
Note that each option is configured differently for each device; e.g. a high shadow quality on Android has different rendering features than a high shadow quality on Windows.

Display brightness
100%

Make Minecraft brighter and easier to see

Opens a menu with a slider to adjust the gamma (brightness). The menu shows 3 creeper faces which are affected by the gamma slider. For an optimal experience, the left-most creeper should be completely invisible, the middle creeper should be barely visible, and the right-most creeper should be clearly visible.
This screen also shows the percentage of the gamma between 50-150%, as well as a button to reset it to the default state.

Framerate Limit
Unlimited

Set a limit for maximum frames per second to keep a steady frame rate or prevent overheating your device

Limits how many frames the game can render per second. Slider can be set between 30 and 60 FPS with steps of 5, or Unlimited.

Shadow Quality

Resolution
Automatic

Fine tune your upscaling resolution

Adjusts the resolution of upscaling for Vibrant Visuals. Can be set to "Automatic", 33%, 50%, 66%, 75%, and "Native".

Render Distance

Adjust the distance at which detail is rendered. A high render distance could impact performance.

Controls the distance in which chunks are rendered. The available settings range as follows per device, with steps of 2:
Operating system Range
👁 Windows
8-28
👁 Android
2-12
👁 iOS
& 👁 iPadOS

This can be changed to any value in options.txt. Values below 8 chunks will result in chunks at higher distances not initially loading, but the chunks will not be unloaded until the distance is higher than 8 chunks. Values above 24 chunks will result in the game actually rendering this distance up to 128 chunks away from the player.
