12w21a is the sixth snapshot for Java Edition 1.3.1, released on May 24, 2012,^[1] which added emeralds, ender chests, and more stairs.

Emerald ore

• Drops 1 emerald when mined.
• Generates in blobs of up to 10 blocks.

Ender chest

• Crafted with 8 obsidian and 1 eye of ender.
• All ender chests in a world have the same contents, if those contents change it affects the contents of all other ender chests.
• On multiplayer, the ender chest's contents are the same for all players on a server.
• Emits light level of 7

Sandstone stairs

• Have the same function and recipe as other stairs, but made of sandstone.

Emerald

• Dropped when mining an emerald ore block.
• Used in villager trading.

Enchanted golden apple

• A second type of golden apple made with blocks of gold.
• After being consumed, the player receives 30 seconds of Regeneration IV, plus Resistance and Fire Resistance for 5 minutes.

Desert temples

• New generated structure in desert biomes that resemble pyramids.
• Have a TNT trap and loot chests inside.

Desert villages

• Villages that generate in desert biomes now are made of sandstone rather than wood and cobblestone.

Trading

• Villagers buy or sell the player emeralds in exchange for certain items.
• Trade with villagers by right-clicking on them, opening up a GUI with one buying slot and one selling slot.

  • Displays the current world seed.

Passive mobs

• Can be easily pushed around by simply walking. This eases navigating through animal farms.

• Now pass through lily pads without breaking the boat; the lily pad drops as an item instead.

Minecarts

• While sitting inside of a minecart, pushing the directional keys makes it move the direction player is pressing. This only works while the minecart is sitting on rails.

Singleplayer

• The local server no longer runs in a separate Java process, despite still requiring a separate JAR.

Creative

• Added snow to the Creative inventory.

Sky

• Stars are more realistic.
  • They are now slightly smaller and slightly brighter.

Commands

• /ban
  • Added optional reason parameter.
  • Ban reasons are displayed when players attempt to rejoin the server after being banned.
  • Hardcore death bans now specify the reason "Death in Hardcore"

Game Menu

• The quit button once again properly reads "Save and Quit to Title".

Options

• Improved options menu.

Debug screen

• The F3 menu no longer has the frame time graph.

• In this version, when loading a singleplayer world, one needs to put minecraft.zip/server/minecraft_server.jar into .minecraft/server manually to continue loading.
