Looting is an enchantment applied to swords and spears that gives a chance to receive more item drops from certain mobs.

Obtaining

[edit | edit source]

Looting can be obtained from enchanting tables, drops from mobs that have spawned in a raid,β€Œ[Bedrock Edition only] books obtained by fishing, monster room chests, librarian villagers, and non-village structure loot.

Usage

[edit | edit source]

Looting increases the maximum number of items for most common drops by 1 per level. Looting also increases the chance of rare drops and equipment drops by 1 percentage point per level.

Looting affects any kill that happens while holding the enchanted item in the main hand, not just any kill by the enchanted item.[1] For example, a player can fire a projectile then switch to the enchanted item before the projectile reaches the target to get the Looting effect, hold the enchanted item while killing a mob with a ghast fireball, or fire a projectile from the off-handβ€Œ[Java Edition only] while holding the enchanted item in the main hand. This allows Looting to work on arrows or thrown tridents, as long as the player is holding the Looting item when the arrow or trident lands.

Looting applies to mobs killed with a sweep attack.β€Œ[Java Edition only] Spear charge attacks done using a spear in the offhandβ€Œ[Java Edition only] do not apply Looting.[2]

Using commands to get higher levels than III works as expected, adding higher numbers with a weight of 1. A mob always drops its naturally-spawned equipment at Looting level 92.

Looting has no effect on certain sources:

Specific cases

[edit | edit source]

If Looting is applied to a bow by use of commands or an anvil in Creative, the enchantment applies to mobs killed by the weapon's arrows. If Looting is applied to a crossbow by use of commands or an anvil in Creative, the enchantment applies to mobs killed by the weapon's arrows but not its firework rockets. If Looting is applied to a trident by use of commands or an anvil in Creative, the enchantment applies to mobs killed by the weapon melee attack, but not its ranged attack.
