The first version of Indev 0.31 was released on December 23, 2009 at 00:40 UTC.[1][2]

This is the first version of the Indev development cycle of Minecraft, and the first paid version of Minecraft (available at €9.95), as Notch released this version for paid users to test out new features.[1]

Additions

[edit | edit source]

General

[edit | edit source]

Lighting

  • Added dynamic lighting.
  • There are 9 different light levels.
    • Due to this, caves have now been made darker.
  • Blocks in the inventory and hotbar are affected by lighting - upon generating a new world they appear dark, then go back to normal brightness after a while.
  • Shadows appear below mobs.
  • Changed shading on the sides of blocks.

Changes

[edit | edit source]

Blocks

[edit | edit source]

Bedrock

  • Added to the last layer of the world again.
  • Hardness now equals 999.

TNT

  • Placing a TNT block, and then destroying it, causes the layer below to turn to wood, but only blocks made of the same material get replaced.[3] This was used by Notch to debug flooding.[4]

Water

πŸ‘ Image
Mob

  • Uses a new model and texture, known as "Rana".
  • Can now spawn again.

Gameplay

[edit | edit source]

Game modes

  • This version is in Creative mode.
  • TNT was removed from the hotbar.

Survival mode

  • These changes can only be found by modding as the game runs in Creative by default.
    • As a side effect of the entity removal, blocks no longer drop items when mined and attempting to fire arrows doesn't do anything.
    • The player only has one bubble of air bubble when breathing underwater, down from 10.
    • The player now spawns with 99 stone slabs, stone, water blocks and lava blocks.

User interface

[edit | edit source]
  • The item forms of blocks are now lit differently and have been rotated such that the top texture now faces the opposite direction. The left and right sides of blocks are now lit the same. If a block used a solid white texture, the top would remain white, whereas the other two sides would be the same shade of grey:

  • The inventory sprites for water (still and flowing), lava (still and flowing), saplings, dandelions, roses, and red and brown mushrooms also changed in this version, but are excluded from the following table as they had other visual changes beyond just shading.

  • Leaf particles fall at the normal speed again.[verify for Java Edition]

  • Placing a block on a slab causes the space between to be completely dark.
  • The top of the map is completely dark.
  • Block breaking particles are pitch black.[7]
