The World of Color Update is the name for Java Edition 1.12, a major update released on June 7, 2017.

The official name for the update, the World of Color Update, was revealed on March 13, 2017, in a Reddit post by Owen Jones.^[1]

The first pre-release, 1.12-pre1, was released on May 10, 2017. This was followed by the second pre-release on May 11, the third on May 17, the fourth on May 18, the fifth on May 19, the sixth on May 29, and the seventh on May 31.

  • Drops feathers when killed.
    • Using a cookie on the parrot will instantly kill them.

New gameplay

• Advancement
  • Replaces the previous achievement system added since Java Edition Beta.
  • Is a data-based system that can be customized via JSON files.
  • Has five tabs with the ability to add more:
    • Minecraft: The heart and story of the game.
    • Adventure: Adventure, exploration, and combat.
    • Nether: Bring summer clothes.
    • The End: Or the beginning?
    • Husbandry: The world is full of friends and food.
  • Advancements are capable of providing players rewards, such as experience points.
  • A number is shown indicating how much a player has towards completing a specific advancement.
  • Some advancements are indicated as a goal or a challenge.
    • Completing a challenge advancement rewards experience and plays a unique jingle.
• Recipe book
  • Shows a list of recipes that can be done through a crafting table.
  • Can be activated by clicking on the green-colored book.
  • When a recipe is clicked on, the materials required are placed on the crafting table.

Other additions

• Narrator – says what is typed in chat out loud ( +  to turn on).
• 4 new commands: /advancement (replacing /achievement), /function, /recipe, /reload
• New function system that loads a list of commands upon usage.
• The hotbar can now be saved and loaded in Creative mode ( +  to save and  +  to load).
• New sounds.

• The colors of banners, shulker boxes, and wool now has a new palette.
• Stricter NBT syntax in commands.

• 1.12.1 updated the game credits and fixed a security issue.
• 1.12.2 changed the name from Minecraft to Minecraft: Java Edition.

A trailer documenting some of the World of Color Update's creations was released on Mojang's official YouTube channel on June 7, 2017.
