The old growth pine taiga or mega taiga is a forested biome filled with large 2Γ—2 spruce trees, with the tall trees being mostly arrow-shaped with few leaves at the top. The ground is made of podzol and coarse dirt and covered by mossy cobblestone rocks.

Generation

[edit | edit source]

Old growth pine taigas generate at moderately low temperature, very high humidity and positive weirdness. They commonly border regular taigas and dark forests. They are often separated by rivers from old growth spruce taigas, a variant with mega spruce trees that have leaves all around the trunk.

Old growth pine taigas can generate in any type of terrain, near swamps and windswept forests, or near mountains with grove slopes and nearby pale gardens. Due to their very high humidity values, old growth pine taigas are almost guaranteed to have lush caves generate beneath them.

Description

[edit | edit source]

As the name implies, an old growth pine taiga includes trees that have attained a great age, and therefore great height. These pines grow all over the landscape, while most of them are tall with 2Γ—2 trunks, regular pine and spruce trees can also generate.

Much of the grass blocks are replaced by large swaths of podzol and coarse dirt. Additionally, rocks made of mossy cobblestone frequently generate on the ground and dead bushes generate alongside the sweet berry bushes, ferns, and large ferns. Mushrooms are more common here than in most Overworld biomes.

Trail ruins may generate here, but villages and pillager outposts cannot. Black wolves, foxes, and rabbitsβ€Œ[JE only] may spawn here. The climate is cold and allows snowfall above layer Y=200Β±8, but this only occurs on top of some trees on mountain slopes. Uniquely to this biome, zombie villagers have the highest spawn rate amongst all biomes.β€Œ[JE only]

Abandoned camps sometimes generate in old growth pine taigas.[upcoming: Third Drop 2026]

With Vibrant Visuals, old growth pine taigas use a coolish humid volumetric fog setting, which slightly fades the distance in an orange tint. Old growth pine taigas have coolish color grading which tints the environment with a colder blue color, and cold sunlight which appears slightly brighter at dusk and dawn.
