Netherrack is a frail stone block found abundantly in the Nether. Fire lit on top of netherrack burns indefinitely and cannot be extinguished by rain.

Obtaining

[edit | edit source]

Breaking

[edit | edit source]

The suitable tool to break netherrack is pickaxe. Netherrack needs to be broken using a pickaxe, otherwise the breaking time will be higher and the block will drop nothing.

  1. ↑ These durations ignore any other influential factors (e.g., Mining Fatigue) and are measured in seconds. For more information, see Breaking Β§ Speed.

Netherrack drops itself when it's destroyed.

Natural generation

[edit | edit source]

Netherrack makes up most of the Nether's terrain, and also generates as part of ruined portals in the Overworld and the Nether.

Netherrack generates as part of bridge and treasure room bastion remnants.

Nylium

[edit | edit source]

Nylium drops a netherrack block when destroyed using a pickaxe that is not enchanted with Silk Touch.

Post-generation

[edit | edit source]

Crimson or warped nylium transforms into netherrack if a solid, opaque block is directly above it, or when it is covered by snow.[1]

In Bedrock Edition, netherrack generates as part of Nether portals spawned floating, making netherrack renewable.

Usage

[edit | edit source]

Netherrack can be used as a cheap building block. Because of its abundance and softness, it can be used to construct temporary structures that can be used for scaffolding, blockage, or other purposes.

When netherrack's top is lit on fire, the fire burns indefinitely and isn't put out by rain. This fire can spread to flammable blocks adjacent to the netherrack.

Using bone meal on netherrack placed next to warped nylium or crimson nylium transforms the netherrack into more warped or crimson nylium.

Issues

[edit | edit source]

Issues relating to "Netherrack" are maintained on the bug tracker. Issues should be reported and viewed there.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The "blood" on the old netherrack texture was originally intended to be red moss.[3] Moreover, Notch was stating that Minecraft will remain blood-free shortly before the Halloween Update release, when the block was added.[4][5][6]
  • Prior to the addition of item tooltips in Java Edition Beta 1.0, netherrack was first officially referred to as "netherstone".[2] A Minecraft.net article claims "bloodstone" was the original name,[7] which was only a common fan alias.[citation needed]
  • A material reducerβ€Œ[Bedrock Edition and Minecraft Education only] reveals netherrack to be a volcanic silicate rock rich in mercury.
  • When inquired about the meaning of "rack" in "netherrack" in an email exchange, Jens Bergensten stated that "rack" doesn't mean anything and "netherrack" is just the name of the rock.[8]
