Bartering

[edit | edit source]

Piglins have a 10⁄469 (~2.13%) chance to barter 2–4 ender pearls when given a gold ingot.

Usage

[edit | edit source]

Ender pearls can be thrown by pressing use, which consumes the item and teleports the player to where the pearl lands, dealing 5HPπŸ‘ ❀️
πŸ‘ ❀️
πŸ‘ πŸ’”
damage of the ender_pearl damage type. In Bedrock Edition, the player will only be teleported if they are in the same dimension as where the ender pearl landed. Wearing armor enchanted with Protection or Feather Falling reduces the damage taken from the ender pearl, but unenchanted armor does not. If a player dies from damage due to throwing an ender pearl, the death message says "<player> hit the ground too hard".

However, if the player throws an ender pearl before hitting the ground, the fall damage is negated, dealing only the pearl’s damage.

Ender pearls have a cooldown of one second before they can be used again. The cooldown is shown in the hotbar slot with the pearl by a white overlay that moves downward and must disappear before the player can use it again. If there are other inventory or hotbar slots containing ender pearls, they are covered with the white overlay as well.[1]

If the player throws an ender pearl and then dies while the pearl is in a loaded chunk before impact, the pearl disappears and the player is not teleported; in Java Edition, the pearl does not vanish upon the player's death if the ender_pearls_vanish_on_death game rule is set to false.

Ender pearls that fall into the void disappear and do not trigger player teleportation. Ender pearl entities are invincible and therefore are not destroyed by lava, and can teleport the player to the bottom of lava pools/lava oceans.

Spawning endermites

[edit | edit source]

An ender pearl has a 5% chance to spawn an endermite when it lands, being the only way the mob can spawn in normal gameplay. The endermite spawns at the player's position when the pearl landsβ€Œ[Java Edition only], or at the pearl's landing siteβ€Œ[Bedrock Edition only].

Chunk loading

[edit | edit source]
This feature is exclusive to Java Edition.

An ender pearl creates a ticket for chunk loading every time it moves (due to its own tick) into a new chunk, and also periodically almost every 2 seconds (39 ticks). It loads and ticks the chunk it is in with a ticket level of 31 as entity processing. It also loads a two-chunk wide ring (a 5Γ—5 chunk area centered on the pearl's chunk) around it as lazy chunks, the first ring being block ticking and the second ring being border chunks. The ender pearl continues to load chunks as long as the player who threw it is online, even when that player is in a different dimension. The pearl stops loading chunks when the player logs off, and starts loading chunks again when the player logs in.

Motion

[edit | edit source]

When thrown straight up, ender pearls travel 27.68993 blocksβ€Œ[Java Edition only] or about 45 blocksβ€Œ[Bedrock Edition only] on average. They travel up to ~51.5 blocks horizontally on even ground when thrown at the optimal launch angle of ~40Β°.

Since the thrower's velocity influences the throw, timing a throw with a jump towards the target can increase the throwing range. It increases to about 42 blocks when thrown straight up and 64 blocks forward at a 35Β° angle. When sprint-jumping and throwing at a 35Β° angle, the range increases to about 90 blocks. For the same reason, throwing while falling significantly decreases the range.

A thrown ender pearl experiences initial speed of about 1.5 blocks per tick. Its movement follows acceleration, drag, position (in subtick order); these variables can be simulated to predict the overall trajectory. Below is a calculator to predict the initial conditions in order to hit a desired coordinate:

thrown ender pearl properties
Drag-H 0.99 Gravity -0.03 m/tick2
Drag-Y

0.99

Ticking order 6
Launch angle calculator[calcnote 1]
Given a target coordinate and an initial speed, calculate the thrown ender pearl launch angle to hit the target. Target is hit after ticks.
X 0 β€“ 51 Yaw deg
Y 1.62 β€“ 0 Pitch

degUnreachable
1 Direct hit

Z 0 β€“ 0 Speed 1.5 m/tick
  1. ↑ Yaw and pitch follow the Minecraft's convention, thus zero yaw is directed at +Z (south) and looking upwards corresponds to negative values of pitch.

Collisions

[edit | edit source]

Thrown ender pearls collide with blocks according to their collision box. They also collide with entities, but with the entities' collision box inflated to about 0.3 blocks in every direction. They collide with all living entities, including minecarts, boats, end crystals, falling blocks, and TNT.

An ender pearl can remain afloat on top of an upward bubble column, allowing it to be stored indefinitely.β€Œ[Java Edition only]

πŸ‘ An image split in half vertically, with the top half showing the Overworld and the bottom half showing the Nether, both from a top-down view. In both halves, there is an identical setup featuring a command block, 10 blocks placed diagonally up and right representing the velocity of the pearl, and a nether portal (facing such that you can enter from the left) intersecting the path. In the Overworld side the pearl is on the command block and hasn't ticked yet. In the nether side, the pearl is 10 blocks right of the command block, and aligned into the top frame of the portal. This is the position in which it enters the nether, and it will continue moving up-right from here.
An ender pearl is summoned over a command block in the Overworld with motion [10, 0, 10]. It finds a Nether portal in its path and is sent to the nether as if it had entered from its final position.
  • If a pearl hits a Nether portal, it is sent to the nether. If the pearl would have hit other blocks after the portal, that collision position is used as the position where the pearl entered the portal. Otherwise, the final position it would've ended at is used. See Nether portal for more details on how entities get placed after going through portals.
  • If a pearl hits an End gateway, it teleports the player as if the player had gone into the gateway. The pearl itself is deleted.
  • As with other entities, an ender pearl which ticks inside an End portal block will be teleported, either to the obsidian platform (if it was outside the End) or to world spawn (if it was in the End). However, if the pearl enters the portal but collides with something before it ticks, it will teleport the thrower into the portal instead.[2]
    • Due to a bug, it is possible to teleport from a stronghold end portal to your respawn point or from the exit portal to the obsidian platform, if you time the throw correctly.[3]
    • The information in this bullet point pertains only to Java Edition; behavior in other editions has not yet been documented.

Issues

[edit | edit source]

Issues relating to "Ender Pearl" are maintained on the bug tracker. Issues should be reported and viewed there.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Ender pearls can be used to teleport/move through non-solid blocks without suffocation and solid blocks by pressing against the blocks and using the ender pearl at the player's feet until the player goes through.[11][12]
  • In Java Edition, it is possible to spawn a thrown ender pearl using commands, but it does not teleport, unless it is assigned an owner.
  • If the player throws an ender pearl in Survival mode and changes to Creative mode before the pearl lands, the player is still teleported.
  • The player is still teleported by throwing an ender pearl and entering the Nether before it lands. The pearl is not lost if an ender pearl is thrown into a nether portal and the player travels through the portal; the pearl lands and teleports the player as usual.
  • If multiple ender pearls are thrown in succession, the player can be hurt only once from fall damage within about a one-second span.
